The mentality of a company's staff will dictate which direction that company takes and this is one of the prime reasons behind FDC's present culture. When the FDC switched gears from "rehabilitation" to the strict parameters of "care, custody, and control", it began to lose touch with its accountability in placing society first.
The fact that the company's vision changed from rehabilitating those that came into the system, to warehousing them for the rest of their lives (or close enough) is responsible for the present paradigm shift in mentality. This shift took them from a belief system that says forgiveness can be attained, to one that says forgiveness is not even to be considered.
What seems to be forgotten is where forgiveness is not offered, a cold detachment will always follow. Where is the purpose to seek redemption when forgiveness no longer exists? Where is hope when life is nothing other than an ever-present impossibility?
The staff mentality differs from prison to prison, but what is found to be the difference-maker is most non-violent prisons have staff and administrations that give hope. That treat those under their care serving life sentences with a belief that they can become something better. That they will become that which they seek and in this, hope will be found.
Prisons that are found to be violent are usually dysfunctional and micro-minded in their management. They mainly believe that the "lockdown" philosophy is the solution to "care, custody, and control". They antagonize and create a negative environment, just to use any excuse to lock down the compound, which further agitates, frustrates, and disrupts any class, activity, or ministry that they may have been looking forward to.
Matters are only compounded when all the good caring staff members choose to quit, rather than work for these types of administrations. This leaves only the rude, abusive, and corrupt to tend to the inner workings of the prison. Where is the accountability for administrations to be effective in keeping good employees? When will it be realized that a company that cannot keep employees is a company that won't be kept?
The mentality of those in charge has to rise above those who they guard and when it is seen that they clearly cannot cultivate change they should be replaced. The acceptance of failure should not be swept under the rug any longer for when we allow them to fail, then that means we fail.
Society-First seeks to empower the people by giving them ownership of the truth and the understanding that they are the solution to the problems. The need to change today's criminal justice system is so vital, it goes hand and hand with ending the repetitive cycle of society's victimization.
